Following an invitation to tender thrown by the Ministry of Ecology, of Energy, of Sustainable development and of Town and country planning (MEEDDAT) of the French Republic, the road’s general directorate chose GEOMAP GIS’ software for road management (edited by the society GEOMAP) as a development base to the future information system to manage France’s national road network. This system is intended for the Ministry’s road services and especially the Interdepartmental Directions of Roads (DIR).

The purpose of the project is to develop a route chart handler (management of road graphs) and a road network heritage handler (substitute to “Visage”). It is driven within MEEDDAT by a solid team organized around SETRA and especially implicating the technical studies centre of the equipment (CETE) of Aix en Provence and of Metz.

GEOMAP has been working since 1992 in the GIS road field and provides more than 40 road services of the General Councils.

« It is a strategical plan for us» comments Philippe Steinmann, Manager of GEOMAP Services, «the specifications authorized in the call for tenders show consistency between the ministry team’s vision and that of GEOMAP concerning road management. The convergence is on the modeling and the management of the universal set as well as the management of the pertaining to road events »

For Yves Cholin of the road’s general directorate, « the new organization of road services, which leans on eleven DIR who are in charge of a network of 11 800 km of unpatented roads, managed by itinerary, required to have an efficient management tool. The partnership which has just been contractualized between MEEDDAT and GEOMAP is win-win deal". GEOMAP will benefit from our conceptual approach and we from their experience and their expertise. We both have the same commitment to result."

The development of information management system of the national road network will bring major evolutions to the current version of GEOMAP GIS from which all clients of GEOMAP will benefit:
  • Distinction between graph and subsites management
  • Improvement of the general interface
  • Improvement of the PLO management
  • Recognition of MERIU v2
  • Review Management on universal set and on subsites
  • Assistance when creating subsites in the Studio
  • Improvement of multi criteria analysis

While GEOMAP is celebrating its twentieth birthday, this project reinforces and confirms the commitment of the firm towards roads manager’s for years. The road management system will meet all the needs no matter what requirement is made in the road and its forecast management domain. Evolution is at the heart of a Road Information System which gathers all roads’ crafts (security, maintenance, OA, vehicle tracking and handrail).
